Use Role and Expertise Filters to Shortlist WordPress Specialists Faster

A role tells you how a person usually contributes. Expertise tells you what part of WordPress they know well. Those are related signals, but they are not interchangeable.

A plugin developer and a performance specialist may both be able to diagnose slow code. A product designer and an accessibility specialist may both improve a confusing form. An agency and an individual developer may both deliver a migration. The useful difference appears when you combine the role you want with the expertise the work requires.

Choose the role from the shape of the responsibility

Use the primary-role filter when you already understand the kind of ownership you need. The directory includes roles such as WordPress developer, plugin developer, theme developer, Gutenberg developer, WooCommerce specialist, SEO specialist, product or web designer, UX and accessibility specialist, performance and security specialist, AI workflow specialist, project manager, and agency or studio.

If one person must own a custom extension, “plugin developer” is a strong start. If the project needs coordination across design, development, content, and launch, “project manager” or “agency or studio” may describe the responsibility better. If you are still unsure, leave the role open and filter by expertise first.

Choose expertise from the technical risk

The expertise filter covers concrete WordPress domains: WooCommerce, plugin development, theme development, Gutenberg and the block editor, performance, security, accessibility, UX and product design, hosting and infrastructure, SEO, multisite, REST API integrations, migrations, maintenance and support, and technical architecture.

Ask which area would create the greatest risk if handled poorly. A multilingual multisite migration may involve hosting and SEO, but multisite and migrations are probably the decisive filters. A new checkout flow may involve design and custom code, but WooCommerce is the environment in which the solution must remain reliable.

Open the professional directory, select one primary role and one expertise area, and review the resulting cards. If the shortlist is too narrow, remove the role before removing the expertise. Technical relevance is usually the more important constraint.

Remember that a card shows only part of the skill set

A directory card displays only several specialization badges so the list remains readable. The full profile can contain more. A professional found through “REST API and integrations,” for example, may also list plugin development, architecture, and security. That combination could matter more than the primary role alone.

The directory also supports name or username search. Use it when someone has been recommended to you and you want to locate their profile directly. For discovery, however, role and expertise are the faster path because they organize the search around the work rather than around who is already familiar.

A precise shortlist is not about eliminating good people. It is about giving the most relevant people a fair first look.
